🎯 Learning Objective
Know the four Vedas, the oldest texts, the Upanishads and the origin of the Varna system.
💡 Concept
- The Vedic Period (c. 1500–600 BCE) is named after the Vedas and is divided into the Early (Rig) Vedic and Later Vedic ages.
- There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda.
- The Rigveda is the OLDEST Veda — a collection of 1,028 hymns (suktas) in 10 mandalas, in praise of the gods.
- The Samaveda deals with melodies and chants and is considered the root of Indian classical music.
- The Yajurveda contains rituals and sacrificial formulas; the Atharvaveda has spells, charms and early medicine.
- The Gayatri Mantra (dedicated to Savitr, the Sun) is from the Rigveda; the motto 'Satyameva Jayate' comes from the Mundaka Upanishad.
- The Upanishads are philosophical texts, also called Vedanta (meaning 'the end of the Vedas').
- The four-fold Varna system (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) is first mentioned in the Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda.
- The Vedas are 'Shruti' (heard) literature; iron, called 'Krishna Ayas', came into use in the Later Vedic age.
✏️ Easy Example
Q. Which is the oldest of the four Vedas?
- Samaveda is music, Yajurveda is rituals, Atharvaveda is spells
- The Rigveda, a collection of hymns, is the oldest
Answer: Rigveda
🇮🇳 Real-Life Example
Static GK sections love 'oldest/first' facts. Rigveda as the oldest Veda, and 'Satyameva Jayate' (on our national emblem) coming from the Mundaka Upanishad, are repeat favourites.
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. The national motto 'Satyameva Jayate' is taken from which text?
- It is not from a Veda directly
- It comes from the Mundaka Upanishad
Answer: Mundaka Upanishad
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. The four-fold Varna system is first referred to in which hymn?
- The hymn describing the four varnas is the Purusha Sukta
- It appears in the 10th mandala of the Rigveda
Answer: Purusha Sukta (Rigveda)
🪄 Memory Trick
Sama sounds like 'Sa-Re-Ga-Ma' — so Samaveda = music/melodies. That one link stops the most common mix-up.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ❌ Confusing Rigveda (oldest, hymns) with Samaveda (melodies/music).
- ❌ Thinking 'Satyameva Jayate' is from the Rigveda — it is actually from the Mundaka Upanishad.
🏆 Exam Tips
- ✅ Upanishads = Vedanta = 'end of the Vedas' (philosophy).
- ✅ Each Veda has four parts: Samhita, Brahmana, Aranyaka and Upanishad.
📌 Summary

- Rigveda: 1,028 hymns in 10 mandalas

- Varna system first appears in the Purusha Sukta (Rigveda)
