🎯 Learning Objective
Master Buddha's life-events, the Four Noble Truths, Mahavira, the Buddhist councils and the key texts.
💡 Concept
- Gautama Buddha (Siddhartha) was born in 563 BCE at Lumbini (Nepal) and died in 483 BCE at Kushinagar (his Mahaparinirvana).
- He attained enlightenment (Nirvana) at Bodh Gaya under the Bodhi (peepal) tree, and gave his first sermon at Sarnath (the Dharmachakra Pravartana).
- The Four Noble Truths: suffering exists (Dukkha), it has a cause (desire), it can end, and the Eightfold Path (Ashtangika Marga) leads to its end.
- Symbols of Buddha's life: Lotus/Bull (birth), Horse (renunciation), Bodhi tree (enlightenment), Wheel/Dharmachakra (first sermon) and Stupa (death).
- Buddhist scriptures are the Tripitaka — Vinaya, Sutta and Abhidhamma Pitaka — written in the Pali language.
- The four Buddhist Councils were held at Rajgir (under Ajatashatru), Vaishali, Pataliputra (under Ashoka) and Kashmir (under Kanishka).
- Jainism has 24 Tirthankaras: the 1st was Rishabhanatha (symbol: bull), the 23rd was Parshvanatha, and the 24th (last) was Mahavira.
- Mahavira (Vardhamana) was born around 540 BCE at Kundagrama near Vaishali and attained nirvana around 468 BCE at Pavapuri.
- Jain 'Triratna' = Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct; its two sects are Digambara and Svetambara; its texts are the Agamas.
✏️ Easy Example

- His enlightenment was at Bodh Gaya
- His first sermon (Dharmachakra Pravartana) was at Sarnath, near Varanasi
Answer: Sarnath
🇮🇳 Real-Life Example
Buddhist site-matching (birth–Lumbini, enlightenment–Bodh Gaya, first sermon–Sarnath, death–Kushinagar) is one of the highest-frequency GK topics in RRB and SSC exams.
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. The 4th Buddhist Council was held during the reign of which ruler?
- The 1st was under Ajatashatru and the 3rd under Ashoka
- The 4th Council was held in Kashmir under Kanishka
Answer: Kanishka
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. Who was the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism?
- The 1st Tirthankara was Rishabhanatha
- The 24th and last was Mahavira (Vardhamana)
Answer: Mahavira
🪄 Memory Trick
Buddha's four life-sites in order — Lumbini (birth), Bodh Gaya (enlightenment), Sarnath (sermon), Kushinagar (death): 'L-B-S-K'.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ❌ Mixing up Bodh Gaya (enlightenment) with Sarnath (first sermon).
- ❌ Confusing Mahavira (24th, last Tirthankara) with Rishabhanatha (the 1st Tirthankara).
🏆 Exam Tips
- ✅ Tripitaka = Buddhism (Pali); Agamas = Jainism (Prakrit).
- ✅ Council order: Rajgir → Vaishali → Pataliputra → Kashmir (1 to 4).
