Learning Objective

Apply lateral inversion to letters, numbers and figures, and spot which stay unchanged.

🎯 Learning Objective

Apply lateral inversion to letters, numbers and figures, and spot which stay unchanged.

💡 Concept

  • A mirror swaps LEFT and RIGHT (lateral inversion) — top and bottom stay exactly where they are
  • Letters that look the SAME in a mirror: A H I M O T U V W X Y — each has a vertical line of symmetry
  • Digits unchanged in a mirror (plain writing): 0, 1 and 8
  • In a WORD, the order of letters also reverses — the last letter appears first
  • Small letters flip into partners: b ↔ d and p ↔ q
  • A figure's mirror image is its left-right flip — a right-pointing arrow becomes left-pointing

✏️ Easy Example

Q. Which of these capital letters look exactly the same in a mirror: E, H, M, P, X?

  1. Same-in-mirror set: A H I M O T U V W X Y
  2. H, M and X are in the set; E and P are not

Answer: H, M and X

🇮🇳 Real-Life Example

AMBULANCE is painted left-right reversed on the vehicle's front — in the car ahead's rear-view mirror it reads correctly, because the mirror flips it back.

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. Which word looks exactly the same in a mirror: MUM, BED, CAT?

  1. A word is unchanged only if it is a palindrome made purely of mirror-safe letters
  2. MUM: M, U, M are all mirror-safe AND it reads the same both ways → unchanged
  3. BED has B, CAT has C — both fail the mirror-safe test

Answer: MUM

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. In a mirror, the small letter b appears as which letter?

  1. Mirror flips left and right
  2. The bowl of b moves to the other side → it becomes d

Answer: d

🪄 Memory Trick

A word stays the same in a mirror only if it is a palindrome built entirely from A H I M O T U V W X Y — like MOM, WOW, TOOT.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Flipping top-bottom in a mirror question — that is the WATER rule, not the mirror rule
  • ❌ Forgetting that the letter ORDER reverses in a word's mirror image
  • ❌ Assuming every letter changes — eleven letters and digits 0, 1, 8 do not

🏆 Exam Tips

  • ✅ Memorise the mirror-safe letters as one chant: A H I M O T U V W X Y
  • ✅ For a figure, just swap left and right; keep top and bottom fixed

📌 Summary

  • Mirror = left ↔ right swap only
  • Same in mirror: A H I M O T U V W X Y; digits 0, 1, 8
  • In a word the letter order reverses
  • b ↔ d, p ↔ q in a mirror
