🎯 Learning Objective
Track the great Mughals from Babur to Aurangzeb, their reforms, monuments and Akbar's Navaratnas.
💡 Concept
- The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, who won the First Battle of Panipat in 1526 against Ibrahim Lodi using artillery; Babur wrote the Baburnama.
- Babur was followed by Humayun, who lost to Sher Shah Suri; Sher Shah revived the Grand Trunk Road and issued the silver 'Rupiya'.
- Akbar (1556–1605) was the greatest Mughal; he won the Second Battle of Panipat (1556) against Hemu.
- Akbar's reforms included the Mansabdari system, abolition of the jizya tax, and a new syncretic faith called Din-i-Ilahi (1582).
- Akbar's court had the 'Navaratnas' (nine gems), including Birbal, Tansen (music), Todar Mal (revenue) and Abul Fazl (author of the Akbarnama).
- Shah Jahan (1628–1658) built the Taj Mahal at Agra in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, plus the Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Delhi.
- Aurangzeb (1658–1707) was the last powerful Mughal; he re-imposed the jizya tax and greatly expanded, but also weakened, the empire.
- The last Mughal emperor was Bahadur Shah Zafar II, exiled to Rangoon after the Revolt of 1857.

🪄 Memory Trick
Mughal order — 'BHAJSA': Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ❌ Mixing the three Panipat battles: 1526 (Babur–Ibrahim Lodi), 1556 (Akbar–Hemu), 1761 (Marathas–Abdali).
- ❌ Crediting the Taj Mahal to Akbar — it was built by Shah Jahan.
🏆 Exam Tips
- ✅ Tie each emperor to one keyword: Babur–Panipat, Akbar–Din-i-Ilahi, Shah Jahan–Taj Mahal, Aurangzeb–jizya.
- ✅ Remember Din-i-Ilahi's year 1582 and Akbar's reign 1556–1605.
📌 Summary
- Babur founded the Mughals via 1st Panipat (1526)
- Akbar: 2nd Panipat, Din-i-Ilahi (1582), Mansabdari, Navaratnas
- Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for Mumtaz Mahal
- Aurangzeb = last powerful Mughal; Bahadur Shah Zafar = last emperor
