Distinguish Himalayan and Peninsular rivers and learn their origins and directions of flow.

🎯 Learning Objective

Distinguish Himalayan and Peninsular rivers and learn their origins and directions of flow.

💡 Concept

  • Indian rivers are of two types: Himalayan rivers (perennial, fed by snow and rain) and Peninsular rivers (mostly rain-fed and seasonal).
  • The three Himalayan river systems are the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra.
  • The Ganga rises from the Gangotri glacier in Uttarakhand; it begins as the Bhagirathi and becomes the Ganga at Devprayag; it is India's longest river.
  • The Brahmaputra rises near Lake Mansarovar in Tibet (as the Tsangpo) and forms the huge Sundarbans delta together with the Ganga.
  • The Indus rises near Lake Mansarovar; its main tributaries are the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej (giving Punjab its 'land of five rivers' name).
  • East-flowing Peninsular rivers drain into the Bay of Bengal and form deltas: the Godavari (largest Peninsular river, the 'Dakshin Ganga'), Krishna, Kaveri and Mahanadi.
  • West-flowing Peninsular rivers drain into the Arabian Sea and form estuaries: the Narmada (from Amarkantak) and the Tapi.
  • The Narmada and Tapi flow westward through rift valleys between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges, which is why they form estuaries and not deltas.

✏️ Easy Example

Q. Which is the largest river of Peninsular India, also called the 'Dakshin Ganga'?

  1. It flows east into the Bay of Bengal
  2. It is the Godavari, the 'Ganga of the South'

Answer: Godavari

🇮🇳 Real-Life Example

River questions ('which flows west', 'origin of the Ganga') are exam staples, and rivers decide floods, farming and drinking water across India every single year.

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. The Narmada and Tapi are unusual because they flow in which direction?

  1. Most Peninsular rivers flow east
  2. The Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea

Answer: Westward (into the Arabian Sea)

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. The Ganga originates from which glacier?

  1. It rises in Uttarakhand as the Bhagirathi
  2. The source is the Gangotri glacier

Answer: Gangotri glacier

🪄 Memory Trick

Only two big Peninsular rivers flow WEST — Narmada and Tapi ('N-T flow to the Arabian Sea'). All the rest flow east.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Thinking all Peninsular rivers flow east — the Narmada and Tapi flow west.
  • ❌ Confusing river mouths: east-flowing rivers form deltas, but the west-flowing Narmada and Tapi form estuaries.

🏆 Exam Tips

  • ✅ Godavari = largest Peninsular river; Ganga = longest river of India overall.
  • ✅ Punjab's five rivers: Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej (tributaries of the Indus).

📌 Summary

  • Himalayan rivers = perennial; Peninsular rivers = mostly seasonal
  • Ganga (Gangotri) = longest Indian river; Godavari = largest Peninsular river
  • East-flowing rivers form deltas (Bay of Bengal)
  • Narmada & Tapi flow west (Arabian Sea) and form estuaries
