Learning Objective
Learn the cropping seasons, top producer states and the coal, iron and bauxite belts.
🎯 Learning Objective
Learn the cropping seasons, top producer states and the coal, iron and bauxite belts.
💡 Concept
- India has three cropping seasons: Kharif (sown with the monsoon, June–July, e.g. rice, cotton, bajra), Rabi (winter, sown Oct–Dec, e.g. wheat, gram, mustard) and Zaid (summer, e.g. watermelon, cucumber).
- The Green Revolution of the 1960s introduced High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds; M.S. Swaminathan is called its father in India.
- West Bengal is the largest producer of rice, while Uttar Pradesh leads in wheat and sugarcane.
- Assam is the largest tea producer and Karnataka the largest coffee producer; West Bengal leads in jute.
- India is the world's largest producer of milk, thanks to the White Revolution (Operation Flood) led by Verghese Kurien.
- Coal is found mainly in Jharkhand (Jharia, Bokaro), Odisha and Chhattisgarh, largely in the Damodar valley.
- Iron ore comes chiefly from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Jharkhand; Odisha is also the leading producer of bauxite (aluminium ore).
- Gold is mined at the Kolar and Hutti fields in Karnataka, and copper at Khetri in Rajasthan.
✏️ Easy Example
Q. Wheat and mustard, sown in winter and harvested in spring, belong to which cropping season?
- Kharif crops are sown with the monsoon in June-July
- Wheat and mustard are winter crops, i.e. Rabi
Answer: Rabi
🇮🇳 Real-Life Example
Kharif-versus-Rabi and 'top producer state' questions are exam favourites, and they explain the farming calendar and the news around MSP and harvests across India.
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. Which state is the largest producer of tea in India?
- The tea gardens of the northeast lead production
- It is Assam
Answer: Assam
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. Coal in India is found mainly in the valley of which river?
- The major coalfields are Jharia and Bokaro
- They lie in the Damodar valley
Answer: Damodar valley
🪄 Memory Trick
Kharif = 'Kharif comes with the Kharif rains' (monsoon, June–July). Rabi = winter crops like wheat.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ❌ Swapping Kharif and Rabi — wheat is a Rabi (winter) crop, rice is mainly Kharif.
- ❌ Confusing the Green Revolution (foodgrains, HYV) with the White Revolution (milk, Operation Flood).
🏆 Exam Tips
- ✅ Remember the leaders: rice–West Bengal, wheat–UP, tea–Assam, coffee–Karnataka.
- ✅ Coal & the Damodar valley, and Odisha for bauxite/iron ore, are steady mineral one-liners.
📌 Summary
- Seasons: Kharif (monsoon), Rabi (winter), Zaid (summer)
- Green Revolution = HYV seeds; M.S. Swaminathan its father in India
- Top producers: rice–WB, wheat & sugarcane–UP, tea–Assam
- Coal in Damodar valley; Odisha leads bauxite and iron ore
