🎯 Learning Objective

Name every family relation correctly and solve chain-relation questions by drawing a quick generation tree.

💡 Concept

  • Same generation (siblings/spouse): brother, sister, husband, wife, brother-in-law, sister-in-law
  • One generation UP: father, mother, uncle, aunt, father-in-law, mother-in-law
  • One generation DOWN: son, daughter, nephew, niece, son-in-law, daughter-in-law
  • Two generations up = grandparents; two down = grandchildren
  • Paternal = father's side; Maternal = mother's side (mama = maternal uncle)
  • Draw a tree: put people on generation levels, join parent–child by a vertical line

🧮 Key Formulas

Same generation → horizontal link

>

Parent–child → vertical link

>

Mother's brother = maternal uncle (mama); Father's brother = paternal uncle (chacha)

✏️ Easy Example

Q. Rahul's mother's brother is related to Rahul as what?

  1. Mother's brother is on the mother's (maternal) side
  2. A mother's brother is the maternal uncle

Answer: Maternal uncle (mama)

🇮🇳 Real-Life Example

At a big Indian wedding you instantly place everyone — chacha, mama, bua, mausi — on a mental family tree; blood-relation questions test exactly that skill.

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. Pointing to Priya, Rahul said, 'She is the daughter of my grandfather's only son.' How is Priya related to Rahul?

  1. Grandfather's only son = Rahul's father (Rahul is a grandchild, so his father is that son)
  2. Daughter of Rahul's father = Rahul's sister

Answer: Sister

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. Sita is the mother of Ram. Ram is the brother of Mohan. Mohan is the father of Geeta. How is Sita related to Geeta?

  1. Sita is mother of Ram; Ram and Mohan are brothers, so Sita is also Mohan's mother
  2. Mohan is Geeta's father, so Geeta is Sita's grandchild
  3. Sita, being the mother of Geeta's father, is Geeta's grandmother

Answer: Grandmother

📝 Exam-Level Example

Q. A is the father of B. B is the sister of C. C is the mother of D. How is A related to D?

  1. A is father of B; B and C are siblings, so A is also father of C
  2. C is the mother of D, so A is the father of D's mother
  3. Father of one's mother = maternal grandfather

Answer: Maternal grandfather

🪄 Memory Trick

Mark every male with a + and every female with a −, stack them by generation, and the answer becomes visible on the tree.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • ❌ Assuming a person's gender — 'C' or 'D' may be male or female unless stated
  • ❌ Mixing paternal and maternal sides (mama vs chacha)
  • ❌ Reading 'grandfather's only son' as a brother instead of the father

🏆 Exam Tips

  • ✅ Always draw the tree — never solve chain relations only in your head
  • ✅ Note down each stated gender clue (brother, sister, son, daughter) as you read

📌 Summary

  • Group relations by generation: up, same, down
  • Paternal = father's side; maternal = mother's side
  • Draw a tree with + / − for gender and vertical parent–child links
  • Only use gender that the question actually gives
