BODMAS — Order of Operations
BODMAS — operations का सही order
Learning Objective
Apply the BODMAS order correctly to simplify any expression.
🎯 Learning Objective
Apply the BODMAS order correctly to simplify any expression.
💡 Concept
- B → Brackets first: ( ), { }, [ ] — innermost first
- O → Of (means multiply): ½ of 8 = 4
- D → Division, M → Multiplication (left to right)
- A → Addition, S → Subtraction (left to right)
- Bar/vinculum (line above) is solved before everything
🧮 Key Formulas
BODMAS: Brackets → Of → Div/Mul (L→R) → Add/Sub (L→R)
✏️ Easy Example
Q. Simplify: 12 + 8 ÷ 4 × 2 − 5
- Division first: 8 ÷ 4 = 2
- Then multiply: 2 × 2 = 4
- 12 + 4 − 5 = 11
Answer: 11
🇮🇳 Real-Life Example
Shop bill: 3 pens at ₹10 plus 2 notebooks at ₹25 = 3×10 + 2×25 = ₹80. Multiply before add — BODMAS in action.
📝 Exam-Level Example
Q. Simplify: 25 − [12 − {8 − (6 − 2̄+1̄)}]
- Bar first: 2+1 = 3
- Inner ( ): 6 − 3 = 3
- { }: 8 − 3 = 5
- [ ]: 12 − 5 = 7; then 25 − 7 = 18
Answer: 18
🪄 Memory Trick
Work inside-out for brackets: bar → ( ) → { } → [ ]. Never jump levels.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- ❌ Doing multiplication before division when division comes first (go left to right)
- ❌ Ignoring the bar/vinculum
🏆 Exam Tips
- ✅ RRB asks 2–3 direct BODMAS questions — free marks
- ✅ Rewrite 'of' as × before solving
📌 Summary
- BODMAS order is fixed
- Brackets inside-out; bar first
- Div/Mul and Add/Sub: left to right
